Arvo Pärts timeless beauty in rich choral tradition

Estonia has a beautiful choir tradition with the Estonian Chamber Choir at the top. For example, since 1869 the country has had a singing party that adorns the UNESCO heritage list, with about 100,000 visitors in 2014. Composers such as Cyrillus Kreek and Veljo Tormis wrote music for this. Tormis composed songs that are strongly connected with the folk customs around the Midsummer festival. The music of Arvo Pärt breathes a timeless, accessible beauty.

Kaspars Putniņš, chef of the Latvian Radio Choir, has also been chief conductor of the Estonian Chamber Choir since 2014, and with that the successor of Daniel Reuss. At the Estonian chamber choir, music by Pärt occupies an important place. Pärt is unmistakably the best known contemporary Estonian composer. He reaches a wide audience worldwide with his mostly understated style, inspired by Gregorian chant and Russian orthodox church music.
