The Gala programme includes new creations, famous pas de deux and highlights from the company’s wide-ranging repertoire, selected by artistic director Ted Brandsen. We’ll also give a sneak preview of several of the exciting new productions coming up this season.
All of the company’s principal dancers will take the stage during the Gala. This is a rare opportunity and the only production in which they can all be seen together in a single evening. Also represented will be the Junior Company, dancing one of its own choreographies, and both companies as well as the country’s youngest dance talents from the National Ballet Academy will join in the Grand Procession.
Dedicated to Rudi van Dantzig
This year, the Gala is dedicated to Rudi van Dantzig, our impassioned former artistic director. In August 2018, it is 85 years since he was born in Amsterdam, and exactly thirty years since the world premiere of his celebrated Swan Lake on the stage of Dutch National Opera & Ballet. At the Gala, we are presenting two excerpts from this production: the White Swan pas deux from Act II and the Black Swan pas de deux from Act III. And as a tribute to Van Dantzig, we are also performing his poignant duet Voorbij Gegaan, created in 1979 for the 20th dancing anniversary of the couple Alexandra Radius and Han Ebbelaar.
After the performance, join the dancers and choreographers for a festive celebration in the foyer.
Dutch Ballet Orchestra
conducted by Matthew Rowe
Dutch Ballet Orchestra
Since its inception in 1965, the orchestra has been proud to accompany its partners, Dutch National Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater. The working method is unique in the Netherlands. Dutch Ballet Orchestra, with Matthew Rowe as principal conductor, consists of a regular core of 45 musicians, supported where necessary by highly qualified guest performers. This gives the orchestra its unique character: flexible, dynamic and high-quality.
Dutch Ballet Orchestra combines music and dance into a magical experience: from classical ballet to modern dance, and from music education to talent development. The orchestra’s mission is to create an optimal synthesis between music and dance, in order to reach dance-lovers and ballet music enthusiasts, as well as children and youngsters.
The orchestra has received several international awards for its educational projects, including the Young Audiences Music Award in 2016 for Creatures, a collaborative project with dance company ISH.
