Jen Shyu & Jade Tongue
Vocalist Jen Shyu brings Asian and Western music together in performances with dance and traditional instruments, improvising with renowned New York musicians. Winner Downbeat Critics Poll 2017.
Her flexible vocals have been compared to the voices of Joni Mitchell and Esperanza Spalding, but in fact no one really sounds like Jen Shyu. Her unique, personal music is the result of intensive research into lesser known and disappearing musical cultures in Southeast Asia. Her performances are like rituals, conjuring a wide range of emotions through vocals, dance, violin, piano and traditional instruments.
At the Bimhuis, Jen Shyu will present music from her album Song from the Silver Geese, on which she sings in various languages. Her band Jade Tongue features viola player Mat Maneri, with whom she recorded several albums, for example as a duo. The group also includes vibraphone player Chris Dingman and drummer Dan Weiss.
American-Asian singer Jen Shyu became known as a member of Steve Coleman’s Five Elements. Her 2015 album Sounds and Cries of the World meant a breakthrough in her solo career, appearing in best-of-the-year lists in, among others, New York Times. This year she was voted number 1 in the Downbeat Critics Poll in the Rising Star Female Vocalist category.
‘Jen Shyu’s music operates in some unpatrolled border zone, blurring lines between folk song and art song, the traditional and the avant-garde, Western and Eastern, between waking consciousness and dream logic’ (Kevin Whitehead, NPR).
