EXTRA INFORMATION

Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam

Rembrandt lived and worked in this house (The Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam) for 20 years. In 1656 he went bankrupt because he could not pay his debts. A notary drew up a list of his possessions. This is why we know how the house was furnished. The historic interior of Rembrandt’s house was restored to its former glory and furnished with items and works of art from the master’s time.

In his printing room and painting studio there are daily demonstrations of how etchings and how painting was made in the seventeenth century. The Rembrandt House owns an almost complete collection of Rembrandt’s world-famous etchings. A changing selection is on permanent display in the museum. There are also regular special exhibitions devoted to Rembrandt and to past and present artists who have been inspired by Rembrandt.
